Venetian stucco, also known as Venetian plaster — lime, acrylic, polymer or synthetic?

Venetian stucco — searched for just as often as Venetian plaster or polished plaster — is today above all a trade name for an effect: veined marble with a mirror-like sheen on the wall. The same decorative stucco can be made in three technologies: classic lime, acrylic and polymer, and the differences show in the depth of the mirror and in how much work it takes to bring it out. Synthetic stuccos are a separate group: they give a smooth surface with a pearlescent sheen, without a mirror reflection. Below is a comparison based on the products in this category.

← swipe the table →
Stucco Mirror sheen Polishing and difficulty
Pigio Stucco (Creativo range)
marble dust and polymers The deepest mirror in this group With a Venetian trowel or a machine polisher, even the next day. The easiest to work — our best-selling Venetian plaster
Rococo Valpaint Second only to Pigio Like Pigio: trowel or machine, also the day after application
Modesto Ecorson
acrylic stucco A mirror is possible, but harder to bring out Trowel only, at one precise moment of drying. Harder to apply and work than Pigio
Calce Grassello, Guardi, Grassello
lime stuccos: lime and marble dust A sheen, but not a mirror Trowel only, at the right moment. The longest polishing — on large walls several craftsmen work at once, because the stucco will not wait
Synthetic stuccos
water-based acrylic dispersion Pearlescent sheen, no mirror The easiest in the group — a wall can be finished in one day; they do not dull over time

That right moment is the state craftsmen call cold-dry: the stucco no longer marks your finger, but has not fully dried yet. Pigio and Rococo forgive a delay and can be polished even the next day; the other stuccos have to be caught at exactly that moment.

Stucco on the wall: a single product or a complete kit?

In this category you will find both single stuccos — for craftsmen who choose their own primer, wax and tools — and ready-made kits for a named effect, with materials matched to your floor area: the white marble effect with veins, the black marble effect with white veins, Calce Grassello for 10 m² and the Modesto mirror effect for 12 m². All decorative kits, including marble with gold veins and the Rococo kit, are gathered in Decorative effects for the wall. Thicker textures — concrete, travertine, glitter plasters — are in Decorative Plasters.

Venetian stucco colours: white, black, grey, beige and any shade from the palette

White and black stucco are the bases of the veined marble effect — white marble with dark veins or black with white ones. Greys, beiges and any other shade we tint on site: in producer colour systems and in the NCS and RAL palettes. You choose the colour on the product page, and the calculator works out how much material you need for your area.

Where does Venetian stucco work best?

Almost anywhere: in the living room, hallway and bedroom, in the kitchen and bathroom, and a fireplace surround is a classic use of stucco. Ceilings are done too. The only exclusion is wet zones — the wall inside a shower and directly next to a bathtub.

Venetian trowel, stucco wax, polishing — what else you need

Application and polishing are done with a Venetian trowel; Pigio and Rococo can additionally be polished with a machine polisher. The surface is protected and brought to a shine with stucco wax — we also stock Cera Valpaint wax and Guardi stucco wax. Every few years the wax layer can be refreshed to restore the depth of the sheen.

Frequently asked questions about Venetian stucco

What is Venetian stucco and where does the name come from?

Venetian stucco is a thin-layer decorative compound made with marble dust, applied with a trowel in several coats and polished to a sheen — classically lime-based, today also in acrylic and polymer technology. The name comes from the decorative techniques of Italian palaces and residences, mainly Venetian ones. Today it works largely as a trade name for the veined marble effect on a wall.

Venetian plaster vs Venetian stucco — are they the same thing?

Yes. They are two names for the same technique and the same products; in the UK you will also hear polished plaster. Manufacturers and shops tend to say Venetian stucco, while people searching online just as often type Venetian plaster. Behind both names are the same materials: Pigio Stucco, Rococo Valpaint, Modesto Ecorson or the lime-based Calce Grassello.

Is lime stucco the same as Venetian stucco?

Classic Venetian stucco is lime-based — the name comes straight from the composition: lime, marble dust and pigments. Today the trade name Venetian stucco also covers acrylic and polymer technology, so check the composition of the specific product rather than the name alone. Lime stucco gives a beautiful sheen, but not the mirror reflection you get on Pigio Stucco or Rococo Valpaint.

Which Venetian stucco gives the best mirror effect?

From the deepest mirror: Pigio Stucco, Rococo Valpaint, Modesto Ecorson. Lime stuccos — Calce Grassello, Guardi, Grassello — give a sheen, but not a mirror. The work differs too: Pigio and Rococo are polished with a trowel or a machine polisher even the next day, Modesto and lime stuccos only with a Venetian trowel, at one precise moment of drying, and lime stuccos need the longest polishing.

What is synthetic stucco?

These are stucco-like products built on a water-based acrylic dispersion, but giving a different effect: smooth surfaces with a pearlescent sheen, without the mirror reflection of polished Venetian stucco. They are the easiest to apply — you can finish a wall in one day — they do not dull and are easy to keep clean. You will rarely find the word synthetic on the packaging, because manufacturers prefer their own product names, so you recognise this group by the description of the effect, not by the name.

Can I apply Venetian stucco myself?

Stucco is a technique for professionals and ambitious amateurs with real persistence — mistakes show from the other side of the room, and corrections are costly. Pigio Stucco gives you the best chance: our customer reviews show that many amateurs got it right first time, because it is easy to work and can be polished even a day later. Modesto is harder to apply and work than Pigio, and lime stuccos are the most labour-intensive.

How much does Venetian stucco cost per m²?

Labour depends on the effect: smooth, single-colour walls cost the least, veined marbling effects the most. On top of that comes the material — the calculator on the product page works out its cost for your area.

How do you create a marble effect with Venetian stucco?

In our guide How do you create a master-level marbling effect using Venetian plaster we show the complete system step by step on a 25 m² wall 6 m high, with a video. A second technique — white marble with black veins and shadows, polished to a mirror sheen on a small sample board — is covered in a separate guide.

Is Venetian stucco suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes — outside wet zones: not inside a shower and not directly next to a bathtub. Apart from that stucco has no limits: living room, hallway, bedroom and fireplace surrounds are standard, and ceilings are done too.

How does Venetian stucco differ from tadelakt?

They are two different techniques, often confused. Venetian stucco is an Italian multi-layer plaster polished to a high marble sheen. Tadelakt is a Moroccan technique of lime plaster polished with a stone and sealed with olive soap — waterproof, with a satin rather than mirror finish, historically used in bathhouses. In our range you will find Venetian and synthetic stuccos.

How do you care for a wall finished with stucco?

Stucco only needs wiping with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals and scrubbing. Waxed Venetian stucco may dull over time — every few years the wax layer can be refreshed, restoring the depth of the sheen. Synthetic stucco does not dull and is the easiest to maintain.
