Watch the 3 Valrenna techniques step by step (2:41)
What you will see in the video (2:41)
The video shows three ways of applying Valrenna paint: the suede leather effect with criss-cross brush strokes smoothed with a clean brush, the linen effect with a vertical and a horizontal coat brushed through, and the Shantung effect with stripes in one direction.
Colour on a screen is not colour on a wall, so before ordering I recommend looking at real samples in the Valrenna sample catalogue. You buy it, and if it is undamaged you can return it within 30 days and we refund its cost. Have a question about a shade or the set size? Give us a call and we will choose it together.
What is Valrenna suede effect paint?
Valrenna Extra Soft is a water-based decorative interior paint by Valpaint whose selected resins and pigments recreate the look and feel of soft fabrics on the wall: suede, goatskin, linen and corduroy. The finish is matt, and the character of the surface depends on the technique - criss-cross brush strokes give an even suede, while a roller with a brush worked in one or two directions gives Shantung stripes or a linen grid.
The paint works as a system with Primer 400, which we usually tint to match its colour. We sell Valrenna Extra Soft only - we do not stock Valrenna 2, as it is less resistant and durable and its final effect is less rich.
Valrenna set features in practice
| Feature | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Fabric texture | The wall is soft to the touch and looks finished in suede, goatskin, linen or corduroy - a completely different feel from flat paint. |
| Three techniques from one paint | You get suede, linen or Shantung with the same material - only the tool and the direction of the strokes change. |
| Matt finish | A calm wall with a smooth look and no sheen, visually close to a limewash finish. |
| Coverage of 7-8 m² per litre in 2 coats | The 4-6, 16-18 and 34-36 m² set sizes are based on this coverage. |
| Fast drying | Touch dry after 30-45 minutes, second coat after 5-6 hours, and fully cured after 24 hours. |
| Many substrates | After preparation you can paint cement, concrete, plaster, stucco, plasterboard, mouldings, wood and iron. |
How to paint with the Valrenna set - step by step
- Prepare the wall: it must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease and other contaminants, and prepared as for a decorative topcoat.
- Apply one or two coats of Primer 400 with a 5-10 mm nap roller so the wall is evenly covered in the paint colour. Leave the primer to dry for 24 hours.
- Apply the first coat of Valrenna with your chosen technique - a brush in short criss-cross strokes for suede, or a roller and brush for linen or Shantung.
- After 5-6 hours apply the second coat with the same technique. It brings out the full, even effect, and after 24 hours the finish is fully cured.
Where this smooth decorative paint works best
- bedrooms and studies - the suede technique gives a warm, soft-looking wall,
- living rooms, dining rooms and hallways - with elegant Shantung stripes or a linen grid,
- Scandinavian, boho, Japandi and rustic interiors,
- doors, furniture and decorative elements in wood or metal - after preparing the surface.
You will find more ready-made sets in the Decorative effects for the wall category.
You can download the Valrenna catalogue as a PDF in the Files to download section at the bottom of the page. The Microline Pro paint roller and the wallpaper brush, as well as Valrenna paint and Primer 400 sold separately - for when the surface needs a second coat of primer - are in Related products.
Frequently asked questions about the Valrenna set
What area does the Valrenna set cover and what is inside?
The 4-6 m² set contains 0.75 l of Primer 400 and 0.75 l of Valrenna paint. The 16-18 m² option has two 0.75 l tins of Primer 400 and 2.5 l of Valrenna, and the 34-36 m² option has Primer 400 in 0.75 l and 2.5 l tins plus 5 l of Valrenna. The paint covers 7-8 m² per litre in two coats. Use the calculator on this page to work out the exact quantity for your wall.
How long does Valrenna take to dry and when can I apply the second coat?
Primer 400 needs 24 hours to dry before you apply the paint. Valrenna is touch dry after 30-45 minutes, the second coat goes on after 5-6 hours, and the finish is fully cured after 24 hours. You need at least two coats of paint.
Can I paint a wall with Valrenna myself?
Yes - Valrenna is applied with a brush and a roller, and the video above shows all three techniques step by step. Plan the job so that one person paints each wall from start to finish. Brush pressure and rhythm differ from person to person, so changing painters halfway leaves a visible line.
Which tools do I need to buy with the Valrenna set?
The set contains materials only, no tools. For the primer you need a paint roller with a 5-10 mm nap, and for Valrenna a wallpaper brush - for the linen and Shantung effects a roller is useful too. You will find both tools in Related products on this page.
How do I create the suede, linen or Shantung effect?
For suede, apply the paint with a brush in short criss-cross strokes of up to 15 cm, then after 5-10 minutes go over it with a clean brush using the same strokes - this removes streaks and mattifies the surface. For linen, roll the first coat on vertically and brush it through in the same direction with a stiff-bristle brush, then work the second coat horizontally. For Shantung, both coats are rolled and brushed in one direction, either vertical or horizontal.
Can I get a limewash-style look with Valrenna?
If you are after a limewash-style look, choose the suede technique - it gives a matt, even wall with no visible stripes and a soft feel.
Which rooms is Valrenna suitable for?
Valrenna is for interior use only, in dry rooms. The suede technique works well in bedrooms and studies, while Shantung stripes and the linen grid suit living rooms, dining rooms and hallways. The finish is gently washable.
How do I choose the colour and can I return the set?
You choose the colour from the manufacturer's colour chart on this page, and you can see real samples in the Valrenna sample catalogue, which you can return undamaged within 30 days. We tint the paint, and for most shades the primer as well, to your order, so a tinted set cannot be returned.
What is the difference between Valrenna Extra Soft and Valrenna 2?
We sell Valrenna Extra Soft only. Valrenna 2 is less resistant and less durable, and its final effect is less rich - it is a budget version that we do not stock.
Project photos and on-screen colours are for illustration only - the actual shade may differ slightly depending on your monitor or graphics card settings.
