What is Deserto pearl structural paint?
Deserto is an Italian pearl structural interior paint by Pigio in which crystal additives create a play of gloss and matt, especially visible in changing light. It is semi-transparent, so Pigio Primer plays a big part in the effect.
The paint is water-based and needs no varnish, and depending on how it is applied it gives around 11 different decorative effects.

How to paint with Deserto in two steps
- On a dust-free, primed and grease-free wall, apply Primer with a paint roller in one or two coats - the wall must be covered evenly with no patches showing through. Wait for the primer to dry, which takes 3-6 hours.
- Apply Deserto with a decorative brush in any direction: chaotically in every direction for a random pattern, or at an angle for a diagonal pattern. Paint at a temperature of at least +8°C and do not varnish the finished wall.

Frequently asked questions about the Deserto set
What area does the Deserto set cover?
The set of 1 l of Deserto paint and 1 l of Primer covers 8-10 m² of wall with one coat of each product. Very intense colours carry a surcharge, and the glitter additive is optional. Use the calculator on this page to work out how many sets you need.
When do I need extra Primer?
The set contains primer for one coat. Sometimes a wall needs two coats of Primer to avoid patches showing through - and as Deserto is semi-transparent, any patchiness in the primer would spoil the look of the finish. In that case, buy extra Primer from Related products.
How long do Deserto and Primer take to dry?
Primer dries in 3 to 6 hours, and only then do you apply Deserto. Deserto dries in 20 to 60 minutes and is fully dry after about 6-12 hours. Apply at a temperature of at least +8°C.
Can I paint a wall with Deserto myself?

Which patterns can I create with Deserto?
Deserto gives around 11 different effects, and the final look depends on the direction, the way you work the brush and the amount of paint applied. The most popular patterns are a random pattern painted chaotically in every direction and a diagonal pattern painted at an angle.
Does Deserto need varnishing and can it be washed?
Do not varnish Deserto - the final finish is more resistant to scrubbing than acrylic varnish. The paint is washable and abrasion-resistant, so it also works in kitchens.
Is Deserto a sand-effect paint and what is it similar to?
Deserto is a pearl structural paint whose effect is compared with Magnat Perla Sabbia, Ecorson Corado, Guardi, Luxmal Glasser and Valpaint Sabulador - finishes of this kind are often searched for as sand-effect decorative paints. Its best-known competitor is Sahara paint, but Deserto is more resistant to scrubbing and has a texture that is softer to the touch.
How do I choose the colour and can I return the set?
You can choose from 38 colours, and the best way to check a shade in real life is the Deserto tester. We tint the paint and the primer to your order, so a tinted set cannot be returned. If you buy several sets in the same colour, mix the paint from all tins together - this guarantees an even shade across the whole wall.
What is the glitter additive for?
Glitter is an optional additive and our own suggestion, not part of the manufacturer's system. It adds sparkle to the pearl texture of Deserto - you can choose gold, silver or hologram glitter, in a single or double dose.
