Which Valpaint product to choose? 17 decorative effects compared

comparison of Valpaint decorative plaster and paint effects

Valpaint offers 17 decorative products across different difficulty groups. Cheapest and easiest: Mavericks (€14-18/m², difficulty 1/5) and Sabulador (€9-17/m², 1/5). For floors and showers: only Microcement Meteor 14 or e-volution PLUS (Meteor 12). Hardest: Rococo Venetian stucco (5/5, masters only).

Hi, I'm Jakub Marciniak and we've been selling Valpaint in our store for several years. I know one thing: it's the brand customers most often call about asking "which product should I choose?" - because there are many effects, and in photos each one looks different than in real life.

I wrote this article so you don't have to call. I compare here the 17 Valpaint products we carry - with application difficulty on a 1-5 scale, real system prices and an honest opinion on when it's worth hiring a professional and when you really can do it yourself.

There's a FAQ section at the end of the article - read it before you order.

1. What Valpaint is and when it's worth reaching for

Valpaint is an Italian brand with over 40 years of experience making premium decorative paints and plasters. You'll find Valpaint products in hotels, apartments and commercial spaces across Europe - they create effects you simply can't achieve with ordinary paint. Japan and Dubai love Valpaint products too.

I'm talking about specific visual effects: the texture of rust and patinating metal, the deep dynamics of water, microcement for floors and walls, an ultra-matte concrete effect that shifts shade with the light, Venetian stucco with a mirror finish. These aren't just nice colors - they are three-dimensional effects that change the character of an entire room.

When Valpaint is not the right choice: when the wall is uneven and unplastered, when the budget is tight, or when you expect an effect with no substrate preparation. Valpaint is a premium product that interior designers love - it needs proper substrate preparation and the right person to apply it. Fortunately, in Poland we have very ambitious investors who can watch a few videos and produce a professional effect on their own wall. The only thing they lack is the know-how and the proven practices of professionals - and that's where I come in to help.

And what I love most about decorative finishes is that the effect and application method recommended by the manufacturer are only one of many options - here, only your imagination sets the limit.

For interior designers: Each Valpaint product page has a downloadable TDS (Technical Data Sheet) in PDF and the option to order a sample. The TDS includes substrate requirements, number of coats, coverage and drying times - all the data for a cost estimate and project specification.

Rococo 1000 (stucco) is suitable for a bathroom once sealed with wax and polished. The e-volution system also allows selected Valpaint decorative paints (Sabulador Soft, Klondike Light) to be applied on floors.

Tip for the investor: Rococo (Venetian stucco) labor ranges from €23 to €113/m² - such a wide spread is because basic plastering is a different level of difficulty than marbling with a mirror effect. Don't ask the professional about the specific technique. You'll reach an agreement more easily if you show them a photo of the effect you want to achieve.

6. Substrate preparation - the key to success

This is the most often skipped step and the most common reason for a failed final effect. I say this from experience: customers call to say they can't get the effect, and after a chat it turns out they didn't prepare the wall.

Important for every Valpaint product: The substrate must be load-bearing, clean, degreased, dust-free and above all smooth. On a textured wall the effect may be unsatisfactory - unevenness will show through thin-layer products such as Klondike, Rococo, Valsetin, Mavericks or Setavel. The substrate must be smooth, dry and stable - no cracks, flaking plaster or damp stains.

A few specific situations:

  • Old latex or acrylic paint - you can apply over it if it's stable, non-dusting, grease-free and well adhered to the wall. In practice you can start right away.
  • A wall after skim coat - the ideal substrate for thin-layer products like Valsetin or Mavericks. The skim coat must be dry and well primed.
  • Plasterboard (drywall) - a great substrate; remember to fill the board joints and screw heads. Before work it must be primed with an ordinary primer (milk-type).
  • Floor under Microcement - ceramic tiles can stay, but they must be stable. Loose tiles, scratches between joints and gaps in the covering must be repaired before application.

Detailed substrate requirements for each product are in the technical data sheet available on the product page in our store.

7. Samples, sample boards and TDS sheets

Before you order full buckets, do two things - especially if this is your first time with Valpaint:

Step 1 - when the decorative technique is advanced, download the technical data sheet. Each product page has a button to download the PDF. The sheet includes substrate requirements, a tools list, the number of coats, drying times and coverage per m². For designers - all the data for a cost estimate is here. You can also calculate the average material cost for your wall area. There's a calculator on every product page.

where to calculate material cost with the store's built-in calculator

Step 2 - order a sample or borrow a sample board. In our store we have wet samples (small amounts for practicing the technique) and sample boards to borrow (you return them and we refund you). Apply the sample to a piece of plasterboard and judge the effect in your own lighting - both daytime and evening. Valpaint decorative products look completely different under different light.

Remember: We don't accept returns of tinted or opened products. That's why a sample or board isn't an option - it's a must, especially for pricier products like Polistof, Microcement or Rococo. Better to spend €8-15 on a sample than €250 on a product your professional can't handle.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about Valpaint

How is Valpaint different from ordinary decorative paint?

Valpaint is an Italian premium decorative paint and plaster brand that creates effects unattainable with ordinary paints: metallic sheen, rust and corrosion texture, depth of movement, microcement for walls and floors, ultra-matte lime. Valpaint products are applied with a trowel or spatula in several layers. The effects are durable, abrasion-resistant and visually one of a kind.

Which Valpaint products are easiest to apply yourself?

Difficulty 1/5 - literally anyone can apply them: Klondike, Klondike Corten, Klondike Light, Mavericks, Sabulador Lux and Sabulador Soft. Difficulty 2/5 - easy for someone with a little patience: Setavel, Valsetin, Juta, Arteco 7, Armonie d'Argilla, Valrenna 2 and Meteor 10 in the basic version. Difficulty 3/5 - Meteor 8, I recommend watching a video tutorial. Difficulty 4/5 require a professional: Polistof, Microcement (Meteor 14 / I-Beton) and e-volution PLUS (Meteor 12). The hardest - 5/5 - is Rococo, where advanced techniques such as marbling and the mirror effect are work for masters only.

How much does a Valpaint effect cost per m² - material and labor?

Material prices in the system (primer + product + sealer if required): Mavericks €14-18/m², Sabulador Lux/Soft €9-17/m², Setavel €11-15/m², Valsetin €13-15/m², Klondike Corten €25-28/m², Meteor 8 €17-22/m², Meteor 10 €22-28/m², Polistof €29-38/m², Rococo €15-23/m², Microcement (Meteor 14 / I-Beton) €45-65/m², e-volution PLUS (Meteor 12) check on the product page. Professional labor: €13-30/m² for simpler effects, up to €113/m² for Venetian stucco in advanced techniques. Prices negotiable on larger orders.

What substrate is required for Valpaint products?

All Valpaint products require a load-bearing substrate that is clean, degreased, dust-free and above all smooth. On a textured wall the effect may be unsatisfactory. The substrate must be dry and stable - no cracks or flaking paint. An appropriate primer is always required before application. Details are in each product's TDS.

What is Microcement (Meteor 14 / I-Beton) and how does it differ from e-volution (Meteor 12)?

Valpaint offers two microcement systems. Meteor 14 (I-Beton) is a system with a smooth decorative concrete effect - ultra-durable, for walls, floors and bathrooms once sealed. Meteor 12 (e-volution PLUS) is a more advanced system with a wider range of effects: veined marble, smooth concrete, special effects. A two-component finishing resin gives a waterproof surface - suitable for showers and saunas. Both systems can be applied over existing tiles without removal. Difficulty of both: 4/5 - a professional is required.

Which Valpaint to choose for the living room, bedroom and bathroom?

Living room: Mavericks (artistic depth), Klondike Corten (industrial loft) or Polistof (glamour accent wall). Bedroom: Sabulador Lux (warm calm), Valsetin (ultra-matte Lime) or Juta (organic fabric weave). Bathroom and floors: Microcement Meteor 14 or e-volution PLUS (Meteor 12) - both suitable for wet surfaces and floors. e-volution is also suitable for showers and saunas.

Is Valpaint suitable for offices, restaurants and hotels?

Yes, Valpaint is widely used in commercial spaces in Europe. For offices: Meteor 10 (elegant concrete) or Valsetin (discreet matte Lime). For hotels and restaurants: Rococo (prestigious elegance), Mavericks (a unique artistic interior) or Microcement on floors. Each product page provides a TDS with data for a cost estimate and project specification.

How long do Valpaint decorative effects last?

With correct application and sealing, Valpaint effects last 10-15 years indoors without renovation. Once polished, Rococo is exceptionally hard-wearing. Microcement (Meteor 14), once sealed, is ultra-durable even on floors under heavy use.

Where can I order Valpaint samples and sample boards before buying?

Our store offers wet samples (small amounts to practice the technique) and sample boards to borrow. Before buying the full quantity we always recommend a sample - the color and effect of Valpaint can look completely different under different lighting. We don't accept returns of tinted products - a sample is a mandatory step.
