Decorative Plasters in 8 Modern Editions

Modern decorative plasters today mean, above all, Venetian stucco with a marble effect, black plaster with shimmering flakes, metallic decorative compounds and concrete in new versions - the material usually costs from about €5 to €27.50 per m².

I describe 8 finishes that have changed so much in recent years that they have earned the name modern, plus two novelties of 2026. For each effect you will find products with a current price - tap a tile and go straight to the purchase.

I focus on plasters for interiors. At the end of the article I have collected the questions we hear most often on the phone and receive by email.

1. Textured plaster for interiors - black flakes and glitter

czarny tynk strukturalny z czarnym refleksem

Textured plaster is a broad term for decorative plasters that leave a rough texture on the wall once applied. It is applied by hand or with a Venetian trowel and a texture roller, and the technique determines the pattern - an imitation of stone, wood or brush strokes.

The most popular textured plaster, concrete, is covered separately in point 3. Here I focus on plasters with an effect that catches the eye straight away.

The second best-selling product in our shop is Creativo Black Hole black plaster by Pigio. It is a black decorative textured plaster with shimmering 5 mm flakes, and decorators most often use it in bathroom designs. Before you decide on a black wall, read why professionals dislike applying black plaster.

If you prefer sparkle to flakes, take a look at Cristalli glitter plaster by Pigio. It is the only glitter plaster in our range and the only one we know of on the Polish market, although few people have heard of it yet. Do not confuse it with Lumicca, a varnish with glitter, or with Polistof paint, which turns out matt without a metallic additive.

Both plasters are also available as testers. It is the simplest way to see the flakes and the glitter live before you order material for a whole wall.

2. Venetian stucco in a veined marble edition

stiuk wenecki w wydaniu marmuru na ścianie

Venetian stucco, often called Venetian plaster in the UK, is a decorative compound applied in thin layers and polished at the end to a mirror effect, which makes the wall look like polished marble. Not so long ago it was associated with linoleum on the wall, the material used to finish hospital floors in communist-era Poland. Today it is back in an elegant form, mainly thanks to the fashion for marble tiles in bathrooms.

Marble-look tiles have a limitation, though. The maximum tile width is 160 cm, so the pattern repeats every 160 cm and the veins do not join into one whole. Venetian stucco solves this problem - a good professional can use it to create the effect of one huge marble slab, with veins that match even over 40 running metres.

Pigio stucco is currently the best-selling product in our shop. Customers buy it both on its own and in ready-made sets for an area from 7.5 to 36.5 m². A trained professional can also combine stucco with textured plasters to achieve an onyx or opal effect finished to a high gloss.

To be honest with you: Venetian stucco is a material for a professional. The mirror appears during polishing, and that takes practice which instructions alone cannot replace. Leave it to an experienced applicator.

This is what Pigio stucco looks like on a wall - white and black marble with a mirror gloss in 25 seconds.

3. Architectural concrete - white, lime-based and scratched

Architectural concrete effect plaster imitates raw concrete on the wall and is still among our top sellers. Until the end of 2024 there was a belief that every modern home had to have concrete on a wall. Today customers choose standard grey concrete less often and its new versions more often.

Marmo Mass by Pigio gives white concrete. The simplest concrete effect to apply is Rullo by Pigio - really a textured paint that you apply with a trowel. Meteore 10 by Valpaint, in turn, is a lime-based concrete that looks like microcement.

The Meteore 10 sets include, among others, the Moon effect and Cemento Rigato, a scratched texture.

Customers also look for Concrete Art by Ecorson. Each pack size has its own product page, for example Concrete Art 5 kg, because each colour has a different tinting cost.

Decorators now combine concrete with gold or silver stripes and LED light strips, and in bolder projects with rust, patina, peeling paint, rock or realistic gold vein effects. This is the advanced level of decoration, handled by professionals after workshops.

4. Rust and corrosion effect (metallic plaster)

Rust effect plaster imitates the natural oxidation of metal and is a modern way to create an industrial style with a touch of the avant-garde. It works best in lofts and interiors with an industrial feel.

Rust has been on the Polish market for several years, but like other effects it keeps evolving - today it is more accurate to talk about a corrosion effect. There are plasters that convincingly imitate the corrosion of copper in a turquoise colour, aluminium in a silver finish with a white bloom, as well as patinated and rusted wood.

In our range, the rust effect comes from Klondike Corten by Valpaint and Oxidecor E by Ecorson. Both work indoors and outdoors.

5. Travertine plaster

Travertine plaster imitates natural travertine stone - with an irregular texture and characteristic pits. It is easy to apply even for a beginner, so it works well as a first DIY decoration.

It comes in a natural version, which is dry and beige, and in a ready-to-use version based on resins. The natural version needs varnishing, which decorators use to tint the pits so that they stand out more.

Modern versions of travertine are combined with metallisers in any colour, most often silver and gold. Decorators also use it in a rock effect with gold veins, made with polymer plasters - called glitter plasters because of the effect they create on a smooth wall.

6. Pearl and metallic plaster

Pearl and metallic plasters give the wall a subtle shine that makes an interior look exclusive. You can apply them to a whole wall or as an accent that highlights a chosen spot in the room.

Metallic plaster can be silver, gold, copper or bronze, and the latest versions let you mix colours freely to achieve very intense shades. It is rarely used on its own - more often it is combined with architectural concrete as stripes or as tints in a rock effect.

The third best-selling product in our shop is Meteore 8 by Valpaint, a metallic decorative compound that you can apply in 5 techniques. It is best to choose the colour from the sample catalogue, because a colour on screen is not the colour on the wall.

7. Raw plaster effect - rock effect

The rock effect is gaining popularity month by month, and social media shows more and more videos of professionals at work. Plaster alone is not enough here - you need polystyrene, ideally XPS or very hard EPS, at least EPS 150, fibreglass facade mesh and a universal resin-based adhesive as the first layer.

There are countless ways to finish a rock effect, and I recommend looking for inspiration from Italian professionals, ideally on Instagram. We do not have a ready-made rock effect set in our range yet. This is a job for an experienced applicator.

8. Mosaic plaster in a new edition

tynk kwarcowy na ścianie

Mosaic plaster is a thing of the past - I agree with you. So you are probably wondering why I included it here.

For several years it has been transforming and slowly catching on in a new form - as quartz plaster with a very fine texture that convincingly imitates stone such as granite or sandstone. It is another incarnation of the material once used to finish house plinths and staircases in blocks of flats.

Quartz plaster is also the base material of fashionable quartz panels, installed on facades and indoors. If you use sticker templates, you can easily create a brick or slate effect. The plaster is also available with additives.

Novelties 2026: Setavel and the groto effect

Beyond the eight finishes that have earned the name modern decorative plasters, I recommend two novelties of this year.

Setavel by Valpaint - ultra-matt plaster with a silk effect

Setavel is a thin-layer, smooth and ultra-matt plaster by Valpaint - a bit like stucco, only matt. The wall has a silk effect and feels soft to the touch. Unlike the satin Valsetin, Setavel gives a matt finish.

Groto effect - polished stone

Groto is a decorative polished stone effect that looks mirror-like and raw at the same time. This year I received many enquiries about it, so I have prepared a ready-made set.

Groto is fairly easy to apply, but the material is hard to calculate yourself - the set already has it matched for you. I will add a step-by-step instructional video here soon.

How to choose decorative plaster for an interior?

If you are hesitating between effects, start with the room and with whether you want to do the work yourself.

  • Bathroom - Black Hole black plaster or Venetian stucco, which replaces marble tiles without a repeating pattern.
  • Loft and industrial interior - rust or corrosion effect.
  • Modern home - architectural concrete: white, lime-based or scratched, also with gold stripes.
  • Accent on one wall - pearl or metallic plaster, for example Meteore 8.
  • First DIY decoration - travertine plaster or Rullo, the simplest concrete effect to apply.

Remember that with effects made of several products with different coverage, a set cannot be put together so that, for example, all components on 10 m² are used up to the gram - some material will be left over. If you want to calculate it for your wall or you are not sure which effect to choose, call us and we will help you choose.

Frequently asked questions about decorative plaster

Which decorative plasters are the most fashionable right now?

In our shop the best-selling product is Pigio Venetian stucco with a marble effect, followed by Creativo Black Hole black plaster with flakes and the Meteore 8 metallic compound. Concrete effect plasters are still among the top sellers - white Marmo Mass, lime-based Meteore 10 and Rullo - together with rust effects. Among the novelties, take a look at the ultra-matt Setavel plaster and the groto effect.

How much does decorative plaster cost per m²?

The material alone usually costs from about €5 to €27.50 per m². The price depends on the product and the effect, and labour is charged separately. You can check the current price of each product on its page in our shop.

What is the cheapest decorative plaster?

The cheapest is a textured plaster with an architectural concrete effect - the material usually comes to around €5 per m².

Can I apply decorative plaster myself?

It depends on the effect. Travertine plaster is easy to apply even for a beginner, and Rullo is the simplest concrete effect because you apply it with a trowel like a textured paint. Venetian stucco is a material for a professional - the mirror effect is created during polishing, and that takes practice. Leave it to an experienced applicator.

Where do decorative plasters work best?

For bathrooms, decorators most often choose Black Hole black plaster or Venetian stucco, which replaces marble-look tiles without a pattern repeating every 160 cm. The rust effect suits lofts and industrial interiors, while pearl and metallic plasters work well as an accent on a single wall.

How do I prepare a wall for decorative plaster?

The wall must be sound, which means grease-free, stable and dust-free. Fill small defects with gypsum filler and larger ones with gypsum plaster - a well-prepared surface helps you save on expensive decorative plaster.

At what temperature can decorative plaster be applied?

Apply plaster at temperatures between 5°C and 25°C. Below the lower limit the plaster may come away from the wall, and above the upper limit it dries too quickly and loses its appearance.

How can I see the effect and colour before buying?

The easiest way is to buy a tester - we have them for, among others, Black Hole black plaster, Cristalli glitter plaster and quartz plaster. For Meteore 8 there is a sample catalogue with colours, because a colour on screen is not the colour on the wall.
